Why Osteopathic Muscle Manipulation is Good for a Variety of Problems

It seems that the incorporating both traditional medicine and natural pain control such as osteopathic muscle manipulation is on the rise all over the world. Various studies have shown that there are benefits for using this type of alternative therapy and right in your own doctors offic. The proof is there that this type of therapy does work for treating a variety of health conditions.

Osteopathic muscle manipulation often called Osteopathic Manipulation Medicine or OMM is a kind of manual therapy that will use physical contact in order to help heal the body and correct faulty function of the musculoskeltal system. This muscle manipulation can be found done in both traditional doctors offices as well as osteopathic offices.

A person's musculoskeletal system is what lets your body move, so it is important that is is not out of whack. It helps give your body stability, form and movement. The one who practices OMM is usually called a DO or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine but there are regular MD practitioners who are also certified to do muscle manipulation as well. Many of the osteopathic medical schools have special training programs set up just for MD practitioners.

This type of therapy is intended to be used with conventional medical treatments where it is deemed needed and appropriate. It is rarely used as the primary treatment for anything unless the problems are a direct result of musculoskeletal somatic dysfunction. This means that a person has a reversible altered functioning of their musculoskeletal system.

This therapy can help people of all different ages as well as backgrounds. It can be used for a variety of different things such as easing pain, promote healing and to increase mobility. It can also help with:

  • Pain of menstrual cramps.
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
  • Migraine headaches.
  • Sinus disorders.
  • Asthma.

While receiving treatment a person can be either an active or passive participant in the treatment.

Passive – This is where the patient does not take a role in the treatment process. They will just asked to sit or lay down passively while the physician performs the treatment on them.

Active – This is where the patient will be guided by the physician to be an active participant in the treatment. They may ask that the patient to contract their muscles or use a certain kind of breathing.

It is important to note that before before any muscle manipulation can be performed on a patient the physician will take their history and also perform a physical exam in order to see what kind of problems the patient is experiencing and what options of treatment might work for them. Every time a patient is seen for treatment they will examine them and evaluate how their body has responded to the treatment and then determine if any further treatment is needed and if so what kind of treatment.

I'm certainly gonna bookmark this page. This isn't something I would typically be interested in however you simply can't ignore the fact that this really is good site content. If only others would put this sort of effort into their content.
